Pakistan Rejects Afghanistan’s Claims of Hospital Strike, Cites “Deliberate Disinformation”

Pakistan has strongly denied Afghan Taliban accusations that its forces struck a rehabilitation hospital in Kabul, allegedly killing 400 people and injuring 250 others. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MoIB) described the claims as “false and misleading,” intended to “stir sentiments” and cover up support for cross-border terrorism.

According to Pakistani officials, the military conducted precise strikes on March 16 targeting “military installations and terrorist support infrastructure” used by the Afghan Taliban in Kabul and Nangarhar provinces. The operation specifically focused on technical equipment storage and ammunition depots.

“Post strike detonation of stored ammunition being used by Master Terror Proxy also fully contradicts the fake claim,” the MoIB stated on social media platform X.

The controversy began when Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesman for the Taliban, claimed Pakistani forces bombed the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital, a 2,000-bed facility, at approximately 9:00 PM. Fitrat alleged that large sections of the facility were destroyed, with hundreds dead and rescue teams working to control fires and recover bodies.

In response, Pakistan’s information ministry provided evidence that the actual Omid Hospital is “multiple kilometres away” from Camp Phoenix, the military installation that was targeted. Officials questioned why a drug rehabilitation facility would be co-located with ammunition storage in a military camp.

The dispute intensified when Fitrat posted an image purportedly showing victims of the attack. Pakistan’s information ministry quickly identified this as a May 2023 photo previously shared by the Afghan Taliban’s interior ministry, calling it “a clear case of deliberate disinformation” and “a calculated attempt to fabricate a misleading narrative.”

“Recycling outdated visuals to support present-day allegations reflects a calculated attempt to fabricate a misleading narrative and create confusion regarding actual events,” the ministry stated, noting that Taliban officials had deleted their original post after being fact-checked.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar reinforced Pakistan’s position, describing the strikes as “precise, deliberate, and professional” operations that targeted only military and terrorist infrastructure. “No hospital, no drug rehabilitation centre, and no civilian facility was targeted,” Tarar emphasized, adding that video footage of all six strikes had been promptly released.

The minister criticized the Taliban regime for repeatedly relying on “false narratives, doctored claims, selective deletions of earlier posts, and the circulation of old visuals to mislead audiences and cover up the truth.”

The incident occurs amid ongoing tensions between the neighboring countries, as Pakistan continues Operation Ghazab Lil Haq, launched last month following border clashes. The operation aims to target terrorist positions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier, where hostilities have escalated significantly.

Tarar underscored Pakistan’s stance, stating: “We will continue to take every necessary measure to defend our citizens, degrade terrorist capability, and deny safe haven to those who wage terror against Pakistan from across the border.”

The conflict represents the latest chapter in deteriorating relations between Pakistan and the Taliban government, with both sides accusing each other of harboring militants and facilitating cross-border attacks. Regional security analysts note that the information war between the countries has intensified alongside military operations, with both sides working to control the narrative around border incidents and counter-terrorism operations.
