President Marcos Jr. has issued a strong call for unity within the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), emphasizing their crucial role in safeguarding national security amid a rising tide of misinformation.

During a military engagement on Friday, the President addressed senior military officials and personnel, highlighting the challenges posed by deliberate disinformation campaigns that potentially threaten the stability of the Philippines’ defense institutions.

“The spread of false information targeting our armed forces represents a significant concern for national security,” President Marcos stated. “In this era of rapid information sharing, maintaining the integrity and cohesion of our military is more important than ever.”

The President’s remarks come at a time when the Philippines faces complex security challenges, particularly in the West Philippine Sea, where tensions with China over territorial disputes have escalated in recent months. Military analysts suggest that disinformation campaigns could be aimed at undermining public confidence in the AFP’s capabilities and commitment to defending Philippine sovereignty.

Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, who was present during the President’s address, later elaborated on specific concerns regarding social media campaigns designed to create division within military ranks and erode trust between the armed forces and civilian leadership.

“What we’re seeing is a sophisticated attempt to weaken our security apparatus from within,” Teodoro explained. “These campaigns often originate from both domestic and foreign sources with vested interests in a weakened Philippine defense posture.”

The AFP has recently implemented new protocols for information security and media engagement, including specialized training for personnel on recognizing and responding to disinformation. Military spokesman Col. Ramon Zagala confirmed that several instances of fabricated orders and falsified statements attributed to military leadership had been identified and debunked in recent weeks.

“Our commitment to transparency must be balanced with vigilance,” Zagala noted. “We’ve established a dedicated team to monitor and quickly respond to false information circulating about the AFP.”

The Philippines has been strengthening its military capabilities through modernization programs and enhanced cooperation with allied nations, particularly the United States. These efforts have taken on greater urgency as regional security challenges intensify, especially regarding maritime territorial claims.

Security experts point out that the timing of these disinformation efforts coincides with the AFP’s more assertive stance in protecting Philippine maritime interests and the enhanced military cooperation with strategic partners.

Dr. Renato Cruz De Castro, an international relations expert from De La Salle University, emphasized the broader context of these developments. “Information warfare has become an integral component of modern geopolitical competition. The Philippines, given its strategic location and alliance with the United States, is inevitably caught in these dynamics.”

President Marcos also took the opportunity to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to the ongoing AFP modernization program, which aims to enhance the military’s capabilities through new equipment and training.

“Our investment in the armed forces is non-negotiable,” the President declared. “We will ensure that you have the resources needed to fulfill your mission of protecting the Filipino people and our territorial integrity.”

Military leadership responded positively to the President’s call for unity, with AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. pledging the continued loyalty and professionalism of the armed forces.

“The AFP stands united in its commitment to the Constitution and the Filipino people,” Brawner stated. “No amount of disinformation will deter us from our sworn duty.”

As the Philippines navigates increasingly complex security challenges in the region, the President’s emphasis on military cohesion signals the administration’s recognition of both traditional and emerging threats to national security, including those in the information domain.
