Authorities in Malacañang are actively investigating what they describe as an orchestrated campaign of false information regarding President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s health status, according to a statement released Tuesday by the Presidential Communications Office (PCO).

The PCO reported detecting “a sudden and coordinated surge in disinformation” across various social media platforms claiming the President is suffering from serious health problems. Officials characterized these reports as “malicious” and completely unfounded.

“These deliberate attempts to spread false information about the President’s wellbeing are being thoroughly traced and investigated,” said PCO Secretary Cheloy Garafil in the statement. She emphasized that President Marcos remains in excellent health and continues to maintain his regular schedule of official duties and engagements.

The spread of health-related rumors targeting high-ranking government officials has become increasingly common in the Philippines’ politically charged social media landscape. This latest incident comes at a time when the Marcos administration is implementing several controversial economic reforms and navigating challenging diplomatic relationships in the region.

Digital rights experts note that the timing of such disinformation campaigns often coincides with critical policy announcements or periods when the administration is facing public scrutiny on other fronts. The current wave of health rumors emerged shortly after the government announced new economic measures aimed at controlling inflation and stabilizing the peso.

“Malicious actors are exploiting the reach and speed of social media to create uncertainty and undermine public confidence in leadership,” explained Maria Ressa, digital technology analyst and press freedom advocate. “These tactics have evolved significantly since the 2016 and 2022 election cycles, becoming more sophisticated and harder to trace.”

The PCO did not specify which platforms were most heavily utilized in the disinformation campaign, but recent studies by local media monitoring groups have identified Facebook, TikTok, and messaging applications like Viber and Telegram as primary vectors for political misinformation in the Philippines.

Presidential security officials have expressed concern that such fabricated health reports could potentially impact market stability and investor confidence. The Philippine Stock Exchange experienced minor fluctuations following the circulation of these rumors, though analysts attribute this primarily to broader regional economic factors.

“We urge the public to rely exclusively on official communications from Malacañang regarding matters concerning the President,” Garafil stated, adding that the administration remains committed to transparency regarding official matters.

Government cybersecurity teams are working with social media companies to identify the sources of the false information. However, experts point out the challenges involved in such investigations, particularly when content is amplified through networks of coordinated accounts designed to evade detection.

Digital rights advocates have called for a balanced approach to addressing disinformation that respects constitutional freedoms while combating harmful falsehoods. “The government’s response to disinformation must not inadvertently restrict legitimate political discourse or criticism,” said Jonathan Corpus Ong, an expert on digital disinformation in Southeast Asia.

This is not the first time a Philippine president has faced health-related rumors. Former President Rodrigo Duterte frequently confronted speculation about his health during his term, often responding with public appearances to dispel concerns.

President Marcos has maintained a vigorous public schedule in recent weeks, including several international trips and domestic engagements. His most recent public appearance was at an infrastructure project inauguration in Bulacan province on Monday, where he appeared to be in good health and engaged with attendees.

The Palace has indicated it will provide updates on the investigation as it progresses, while continuing to focus on the administration’s economic agenda and governance priorities for the remainder of the year.
