In Marseille, a coordinated smear campaign has targeted Sébastien Delogu, the La France Insoumise (LFI) candidate in the upcoming mayoral election. For several weeks, anonymous accusations of rape and violence against the radical left MP have been circulating online and through physical flyers across the city.

The campaign began in mid-February when a blog and social media accounts appeared under the name “Sophie,” making serious allegations against Delogu. The timing appears deliberately calculated to impact the municipal election, with the anonymous accuser working methodically to ensure maximum visibility of the claims.

Investigators have discovered that the perpetrators distributed flyers at strategic locations throughout Marseille, including on official election billboards. Each flyer featured a QR code directing people to the website containing the accusations. In a coordinated effort to amplify the message, local journalists covering the municipal campaign, including Le Monde’s correspondent, received anonymous emails urging them to visit the site and investigate the claims.

Digital forensic analysis of the “Sophie” profile has revealed numerous red flags indicating a sophisticated disinformation operation. The Facebook account associated with “Sophie” displayed artificially inflated engagement metrics, with comments and “likes” originating from fake automated accounts, many traced back to locations in Asia. This suggests a financial investment in the campaign, as the account owner paid for verification and purchased engagement to create the appearance of legitimacy.

“This type of targeted disinformation campaign represents a growing concern in French municipal politics,” said Mathieu Laurent, a political analyst specializing in digital campaigns. “We’ve seen similar tactics employed in other European elections, but the level of coordination and financial backing in this case is particularly troubling.”

Despite the considerable resources invested in the smear campaign, it failed to achieve viral status on social media platforms. The artificial nature of the engagement likely prevented the algorithm-driven spread that genuine controversial content typically generates.

Delogu, who has maintained his innocence throughout, formally responded to the allegations on March 2 by filing a defamation complaint with local authorities. “These baseless accusations are a deliberate attempt to undermine the democratic process in Marseille,” Delogu stated through a spokesperson. “We have full confidence that investigators will identify those responsible.”

The Marseille incident comes amid growing concerns about disinformation in French politics. The country’s electoral authority has been working to strengthen protections against such campaigns since the 2017 presidential election, when Emmanuel Macron’s campaign was targeted by hackers and disinformation operatives.

Political experts note that municipal elections are particularly vulnerable to such tactics, as they typically receive less scrutiny from national media and security agencies. “Local elections can be influenced by relatively small-scale operations,” said Claire Dumont from the Paris Institute of Political Studies. “The perpetrators only need to sway a few thousand voters to potentially change the outcome.”

Marseille, France’s second-largest city, has historically been a politically contested municipality where elections are often decided by narrow margins. The current campaign has been particularly heated, with issues of crime, housing, and economic development dominating debate in the Mediterranean port city.

Authorities have not yet identified who is behind the “Sophie” persona, but cybersecurity experts suggest the level of coordination points to a group rather than an individual effort. The investigation continues as Marseille voters prepare to head to the polls in the coming weeks.

For Delogu and his campaign team, the challenge now is to refocus public attention on policy issues while awaiting the results of the defamation investigation.
