Tennis journalist dismisses reports of Swiatek-Fissette split as “fake news”
Polish tennis journalist Dominik Senkowski has firmly rejected circulating rumors that world-class player Iga Swiatek has parted ways with her coach Wim Fissette, labeling such reports as “disinformation.”
“As I’ve managed to confirm, this is FAKE NEWS. Iga Świątek is not parting ways with Wim Fissette,” Senkowski wrote on social media platform X. “Generally, I’d brush off the topic, but I see that more media outlets and tennis journalists have started repeating this information. We really need to watch out for disinformation these days.”
The rumors began spreading after Swiatek’s recent underwhelming performances, with social media posts suggesting she might begin working with Argentine coach Carlos Rodriguez, who previously guided Justine Henin and Amanda Anisimova. Senkowski noted that the original tweet making this claim has since been deleted, along with subsequent reposts from tennis publications and journalists.
Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, began her professional relationship with the renowned Belgian coach in October 2024. The partnership had a somewhat challenging start, with the Polish star failing to secure any titles or reach any finals during the initial months of 2025.
However, the collaboration proved fruitful during last year’s grass-court season when Swiatek reached the Bad Homburg Open final, finishing as runner-up to Jessica Pegula. This momentum culminated in her triumph at Wimbledon, allowing her to complete the rare achievement of winning Grand Slam titles on all three surfaces—clay, hard court, and grass—known as the “Surface Slam.”
Swiatek’s successful 2025 campaign also included victories at the WTA 1000 Cincinnati Open and the WTA 500 Korea Open, bringing her career singles title count to an impressive 25. She additionally contributed to Poland’s victory in the United Cup team competition in January.
Despite these accomplishments, Swiatek has struggled with consistency in recent months. She failed to advance beyond the round-robin stage at the WTA Finals last November, suffered a straight-sets defeat to Elena Rybakina in the Australian Open quarterfinals, and most recently lost a three-set match to Maria Sakkari at the Qatar Open.
Following her defeat to Sakkari, Swiatek acknowledged her need to reassess her approach. “I need to go back to the drawing board to figure out what is going wrong in matches,” she said, though she made no mention of any coaching changes.
Fissette brings considerable pedigree to Swiatek’s team, having previously coached multiple Grand Slam champions including Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka, and Naomi Osaka. His expertise in developing champions makes him a valuable asset as Swiatek works through her current challenges.
The Polish star will have ample time to work with Fissette on addressing her recent performance issues, as she has withdrawn from this week’s Dubai Tennis Championships citing a “schedule change.” Her next competitive appearance is expected at the prestigious Indian Wells Open in March, one of the most important WTA 1000 events on the calendar.
The episode highlights the often turbulent nature of player-coach relationships in professional tennis, where performance dips frequently trigger speculation about potential changes. It also underscores the growing challenge of misinformation in sports reporting, particularly when spread through social media channels.
