Israel’s ambassador to India has firmly denied widespread rumors about the death of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, dismissing the claims as deliberate disinformation amid the escalating conflict in West Asia.

Ambassador Reuven Azar addressed reporters in New Delhi on Monday, stating categorically: “PM Netanyahu is alive. I saw him when I was in Israel more than once. The video at the cafe is not AI-fabricated. A lot of disinformation is being spread.”

The diplomatic clarification comes as social media platforms have been flooded with unsubstantiated reports claiming Netanyahu had suffered fatal injuries during the ongoing regional conflict, which has now entered its 17th day. The ambassador specifically pointed to Iran and its allies as the source of the false information.

“This is a classical disinformation projection that the Iranians and their accomplices are trying to do,” Azar explained to PTI on the sidelines of a briefing about Israel’s Operation Roaring Lion. “Our prime minister is feeling very well. I met him personally following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel. He’s completely intact.”

Netanyahu himself has moved to counter these rumors with visual evidence of his wellbeing. On Monday, he shared a 90-second video on his personal X account showing him interacting with citizens in the Jerusalem Hills. The prime minister captioned the footage: “Sticking to the guidelines and winning together.”

This follows another video released Sunday, in which Netanyahu mocked the death rumors while ordering coffee at what appeared to be a roadside mini market. When told that some media channels were reporting his death, the prime minister quipped, “I am dying for coffee.”

The rumors gained traction due to Netanyahu’s reduced public appearances over the past week, creating an information vacuum that was quickly filled with speculation. Such misinformation campaigns have become increasingly common during international conflicts, with social media serving as both an accelerant and distribution network for unverified claims.

The situation highlights the broader information warfare dimension of the ongoing West Asia conflict. Disinformation tactics have become a significant component of modern geopolitical tensions, with state and non-state actors using false narratives to create confusion, undermine confidence, or advance strategic objectives.

Israel’s Operation Roaring Lion, which Ambassador Azar was briefing on when the questions about Netanyahu arose, represents the country’s military response to regional threats. The operation comes at a time of heightened tension throughout the Middle East, with multiple flashpoints threatening wider regional instability.

The Israeli Embassy in India has taken an active role in countering narratives it views as harmful to Israel’s interests, particularly as India maintains diplomatic and economic relationships with multiple parties in the region.

Media analysts note that the rapid spread of the Netanyahu death rumors demonstrates the challenges of maintaining accurate information flows during conflict situations. The incident also underscores the importance of official diplomatic channels in verifying sensitive claims during times of international crisis.

As the conflict continues to evolve, both Israeli officials and Netanyahu himself appear committed to maintaining regular public communications to prevent similar speculation from gaining traction in the future.
