Indonesia’s communications ministry has issued a stern warning to Meta Platforms, citing the tech giant’s inadequate efforts to combat online gambling and disinformation across its social media networks.

The warning came after Communications and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid conducted an unannounced inspection of Meta’s Jakarta office on Wednesday. According to ministry officials, the surprise visit was motivated by growing concerns over Meta’s compliance with Indonesia’s content regulations, which they described as alarmingly low.

Government data revealed that Meta had addressed only 28.47 percent of content flagged for online gambling and disinformation violations. Authorities also expressed significant concern about the proliferation of defamation and hate speech across Meta’s platforms, which include Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp – services that collectively reach millions of Indonesian users.

“Disinformation, defamation, and hate content threaten lives in Indonesia, yet Meta has allowed them to persist,” Minister Hafid stated in an official release following the inspection.

The ministry has called on Meta to substantially strengthen its content moderation systems and expedite the removal of illegal and harmful material. Officials emphasized that all digital platforms operating within Indonesia’s jurisdiction must fully comply with national regulations designed to protect users from potentially harmful content.

Meta has not yet issued a response to these allegations or the ministerial visit.

This confrontation represents an escalation in Indonesia’s regulatory approach toward social media companies. Last year, the communications ministry summoned representatives from Meta and other major social media platforms, directing them to enhance their content moderation practices amid mounting public concerns about online disinformation.

Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy with a population of over 270 million, has become increasingly assertive in regulating digital platforms. The government has implemented a series of regulations requiring technology companies to register for licenses, pay appropriate taxes, and comply with content moderation standards that align with local laws and cultural values.

The country represents a significant market for global social media companies, with an estimated 191 million active social media users as of 2023. Facebook alone counts approximately 130 million Indonesian users, making the country one of its largest markets globally.

The Indonesian government’s crackdown on digital platforms comes amid a broader regional trend of tightening tech regulation across Southeast Asia. Neighboring countries, including Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand, have all introduced stricter regulatory frameworks for social media companies in recent years.

Industry analysts note that Meta faces mounting regulatory challenges globally, with countries increasingly demanding greater accountability for content published on its platforms. The company has invested in content moderation technologies and human reviewers, but critics argue these efforts remain insufficient relative to the scale of harmful content.

The standoff between Indonesia and Meta highlights the complex balancing act global tech companies face between facilitating free expression and adhering to varying national regulations on content moderation. For Indonesia, the stakes include protecting social harmony in a diverse nation while maintaining an open digital economy that continues to attract international technology investment.

As the situation develops, observers will be watching closely to see whether Meta increases its compliance with Indonesian regulations or faces potential penalties from one of its most important Asian markets.
