UN Special Rapporteur Falsely Accused After Doctored Video Spreads Online
Several European government officials have called for the resignation of UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese based on remarks she never made, following the circulation of a deliberately edited video clip online.
The controversy erupted when a truncated clip appeared to show Albanese referring to Israel as “the common enemy of humanity.” This prompted immediate condemnation from high-ranking officials across Europe and the United States, with many demanding she step down from her position as Special Rapporteur for the human rights situation in Palestine.
Among those who publicly criticized Albanese were German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who called her position “untenable”; French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who “unreservedly condemns the outrageous and reprehensible remarks”; and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who stated her “behaviours…are not appropriate for the position she holds.”
Other officials joined the chorus, including Czech Republic’s Foreign Minister Petr Macinka and US Ambassador Mike Waltz, who accused Albanese of antisemitism. Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger went further, alleging that Albanese was spreading hate speech and failing to meet UN standards of impartiality.
However, multiple media outlets, including Reuters and France24, along with the UN Human Rights Office, have confirmed the video was doctored. According to the complete footage from an Al Jazeera roundtable event in Doha, Albanese never characterized Israel as “the enemy of humanity.”
In her actual remarks, Albanese stated: “We who do not control large amounts of financial capitals, algorithms and weapons, we now see that we as a humanity have a common enemy, and freedoms, the respect of fundamental freedoms is the last peaceful avenue, the last peaceful toolbox we have to regain our freedom.”
Marta Hurtado, spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, clarified during a press conference that Albanese “did not characterize any state as an enemy of humanity.” Hurtado expressed concern about the “personal attacks, threats and disinformation” targeting UN officials and independent experts, noting that such campaigns distract from serious human rights issues.
Albanese herself has rejected the accusations, clarifying on social media that “the common enemy of humanity is the system that has enabled the genocide in Palestine, including the financial capital that funds it, the algorithms that obscure it and the weapons that enable it.”
Evidence suggests the edited clip was initially shared by Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, a pro-Israel NGO that has repeatedly criticized Albanese since October 7, 2023, accusing her of being “antisemitic” and “pro-Hamas.” UN Watch did not respond to requests for comment about the source of the clip.
Amnesty International Secretary General Agnès Callamard has called for ministers to fully retract their demands for Albanese’s resignation. “It is reprehensible that ministers have attacked [Albanese] based on a deliberately truncated video to misrepresent and gravely misconstrue her messages,” Callamard stated.
The Association of Jurists for the Respect of International Law has filed a criminal complaint against French Foreign Minister Barrot, claiming his statements may violate French law regarding the dissemination of false information.
When contacted, only the German Federal Foreign Office responded, stating that Minister Wadephul “was referring to the statement as a whole, not to a manipulated video” and that Albanese has “repeatedly made statements and spread untenable falsehoods in the past.”
This incident comes amid Albanese’s ongoing work documenting what she has termed Israel’s “genocidal campaign in Gaza.” In June 2025, she published a report examining corporate involvement in sustaining Israel’s military operations, highlighting how companies including IBM, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Palantir have supplied technologies that enable “mass violence and immense destruction.”
The Austrian Foreign Minister has since deleted her post accusing Albanese of spreading hate speech, while Albanese continues to face restrictions from a 2025 Trump administration sanction that prevents her from accessing US-based bank accounts or traveling to the United States.
