Prominent human rights organizations have come to the defense of Francesca Albanese, the UN’s special rapporteur on Palestinian territories, following what they describe as a coordinated campaign of misinformation that led several European officials to call for her resignation.

Albanese, who has served in her UN role since May 2022, found herself at the center of controversy when a shortened video clip circulated on social media allegedly showing her referring to Israel as humanity’s “common enemy” during an Al Jazeera event in Doha. However, a longer version of the footage shared by Albanese herself contradicts this characterization of her remarks.

The incident triggered immediate condemnation from government ministers in France, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Czechia, with several publicly demanding she step down from her position. Albanese has been a vocal critic of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which has drawn both support and criticism from various quarters.

Amnesty International’s Secretary General Agnès Callamard issued a strongly worded statement on Friday condemning the ministers’ actions. “It is reprehensible that ministers… have attacked [Ms Albanese] based on a deliberately truncated video to misrepresent and gravely misconstrue her messages – as is clear from watching her original address in its entirety,” Callamard said.

Callamard called for more than just deleted social media posts from the ministers involved, demanding public apologies and retractions of their calls for Albanese’s resignation. She also urged governmental investigations into how the misinformation spread, with mechanisms to prevent similar situations in the future.

In her statement, Callamard contrasted the ministers’ rapid condemnation of Albanese with their reluctance to hold Israel accountable for alleged human rights violations. “If only these ministers had been as loud and forceful in confronting a state committing genocide, unlawful occupation and apartheid as they have in attacking a UN expert,” she said.

The controversy has taken a legal turn in France, where the Association of Jurists for the Respect of International Law (JURDI) has filed a criminal complaint against French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot. The organization alleges that Barrot’s statements calling for Albanese’s resignation may constitute the criminal offense of disseminating false information under French law.

Since assuming her role, Albanese has become known for her outspoken positions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Last summer, she faced sanctions from the Trump administration after publishing a report that identified businesses, charities, and universities allegedly profiting from what she characterized as Israel’s occupation and genocide.

The report drew significant attention to Albanese’s work as the UN’s independent expert tasked with monitoring human rights in Palestinian territories occupied since 1967. Her mandate currently extends until 2028, despite the recent calls for her resignation.

This incident highlights the increasingly polarized nature of discourse surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and raises questions about how social media can be used to spread abbreviated content that alters context. It also underscores the challenges faced by international officials who take strong positions on contentious geopolitical issues.

As the situation develops, attention will likely focus on whether the European ministers in question retract their statements as demanded by Amnesty International, and on the outcome of the legal complaint filed in France against Minister Barrot.
