Philippine Government Combats “Coordinated” Health Misinformation Campaign Against President Marcos

The Philippine government has launched a strong offensive against what officials describe as a “coordinated” disinformation campaign falsely claiming President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is suffering from stage four colon cancer or is in a coma. Despite repeated official statements and recent public appearances confirming the President’s good health, these rumors continue to proliferate across social media platforms.

Presidential Communications Secretary Dave Gomez on Thursday condemned the spread of these “outright lies,” suggesting they are timed to destabilize the administration as it grapples with pressing national issues, including energy concerns stemming from the Middle East conflict.

“The timing is suspect. Why the sudden surge at this time? Why resort to outright lies? Why the desperation? Regardless, the motive is clear. Distract and destabilize our government,” Gomez stated in an official release.

The misinformation campaign has been particularly aggressive, with social media users claiming that recent video footage of the President attending public events has been manipulated or is outdated. Some conspiracy theorists have even accused mainstream media outlets of participating in a cover-up regarding Marcos’ health status.

In response, the Presidential Communications Office has begun documenting and tracking every post, comment, and statement spreading false health claims about the President. “Each one is a piece of evidence we can use in court,” Gomez stated, adding that the government plans to identify perpetrators, trace their networks, and file appropriate charges once sufficient evidence has been collected, possibly as early as next week.

The rumors gained traction following Marcos’ diagnosis with diverticulitis—an inflammation in the large intestine—in January. Though the President clarified at the time that his condition was not life-threatening, opposition critics seized upon his health status as a point of political attack.

Addressing the rumors directly, President Marcos appeared in a video interview released by PCO Undersecretary Claire Castro on Wednesday, where he reassured the public about his health. “I want to thank those who are concerned about me. Do not take (the rumors) seriously. You know, social media tends to be humorous,” the President said.

He emphasized that he has returned to his normal routine for the past two to three months following his diverticulitis episode. “I’m doing my usual (activities), watching my health, making sure that I’m always ready to do the work,” Marcos stated.

The National Bureau of Investigation has also weighed in on the matter. NBI spokesman and lawyer Palmer Mallari suggested in a television interview on Thursday that the spread of false information regarding the President’s health could indeed be part of a coordinated destabilization plot against the administration.

The health rumors come at a challenging time for the Marcos administration, which recently declared a state of energy emergency in response to rising tensions in the Middle East and their potential impact on global energy markets. The Philippines, being heavily dependent on imported oil, remains particularly vulnerable to international supply disruptions.

“The President remains laser-focused on one mission: solving our energy emergency and delivering real, tangible help to every Filipino family, improving their lives and strengthening our economy,” Gomez emphasized, suggesting that the administration would not be deterred by what it views as politically motivated disinformation.

Political analysts note that health-related rumors targeting sitting presidents are not new in Philippine politics, but the coordinated nature and digital amplification of the current campaign represent an evolution in political destabilization tactics in the social media era.
