Philippine authorities on Thursday announced they have detected a “sudden and coordinated surge” of disinformation on social media regarding President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s health, with officials warning that legal action will be pursued against those responsible.

Presidential Communications Office Acting Secretary Dave Gomez said the spread of false health-related claims about the President has intensified dramatically in recent days, even infiltrating some traditional media outlets.

“The timing is suspect. Why the sudden surge at this time? Why resort to outright lies? Why the desperation? Regardless, the motive is clear: distract and destabilize our government,” Gomez said in a message to Palace reporters.

The communications secretary characterized the campaign as a “vicious attack” designed to undermine the administration at a critical time when it faces significant domestic challenges, particularly in the energy sector.

Despite the circulation of these rumors, President Marcos remains focused on addressing what officials have described as an ongoing “energy emergency” in the Philippines. The administration is prioritizing measures to mitigate the impact of rising energy costs on Filipino households and businesses amid global supply concerns and domestic infrastructure challenges.

“The President will not be distracted by this noise. The President remains laser-focused on one mission: solving our energy emergency and delivering real, tangible help to every Filipino family,” Gomez emphasized.

The Presidential Communications Office is actively monitoring and documenting social media content related to the alleged disinformation campaign, including posts and comments. This digital evidence, according to Gomez, will be used in potential court cases against perpetrators.

In fact, the PCO is already preparing to file a formal complaint with the Department of Justice against those spreading false claims about the President’s health, with legal action possibly commencing as early as next week.

The Palace has repeatedly stressed that President Marcos remains in good health. Officials attribute his noticeable weight loss to dietary adjustments following a previous diagnosis of diverticulitis, an inflammatory condition affecting the digestive tract.

This disinformation campaign comes at a challenging time for the Marcos administration, which has been grappling with multiple issues including inflation, energy security concerns, and geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea.

Political analysts suggest that health-related rumors about leaders are a common destabilization tactic in Philippine politics. Similar campaigns targeted former presidents, including Rodrigo Duterte, whose health was frequently the subject of speculation during his term.

The aggressive response from Malacañang indicates the administration’s growing concern about the impact of social media disinformation on governance and public perception. The Philippines has been identified in numerous studies as particularly vulnerable to coordinated disinformation campaigns due to its high social media usage rates and complex political landscape.

Media watchdogs in the country have noted a significant increase in politically motivated disinformation since the 2022 presidential election that brought Marcos to power. The current situation highlights the ongoing challenge of distinguishing between legitimate criticism of government policies and orchestrated campaigns designed to undermine public institutions.

As the administration prepares its legal response, questions remain about who might be behind the alleged disinformation effort and what broader political objectives they might have beyond simply questioning the President’s health status.
