Bangladesh’s opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has raised serious concerns about potential electoral manipulation ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections, accusing political rivals of preparing to cast fraudulent votes and engaging in systematic propaganda campaigns.

During a press briefing at the BNP’s Gulshan office on Tuesday, Mahdi Amin, spokesperson for the party’s central election steering committee, outlined what he described as troubling tactics being employed to undermine the democratic process.

“Recognizing the reality of our public support, a particular party has been continuously spreading propaganda, promoting violent politics, exploiting religion for political gain, and even preparing for fake votes,” Amin stated. “Faced with the power of the people, such tactics are proof of their political bankruptcy.”

The BNP’s allegations come amid what they describe as mounting evidence of their popular support, including recent media coverage, surveys from credible institutions, and substantial attendance at rallies led by party Chairman Tarique Rahman since January 22. According to Amin, these indicators suggest the BNP would secure victory in a fair election environment.

The accusations highlight growing tensions in Bangladesh’s political landscape, where electoral integrity has long been a contentious issue. The BNP, which has spent years in opposition, sees the upcoming vote as a critical opportunity to regain political influence in a country that has been dominated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League for over a decade.

Amin specifically pointed to alleged vote-buying incidents, including one in the Dhaka-15 constituency where a senior lawyer reportedly affiliated with the rival party was captured on video distributing money to influence voters. The footage, according to the BNP spokesperson, has sparked nationwide criticism after going viral on social media.

“If such practices occur in the party chairman’s own constituency, it raises serious concerns about nationwide misconduct,” Amin warned.

Similar allegations have emerged from Khulna-1, where candidates from the same opposing party allegedly distributed cash among potential voters in what the BNP characterizes as clear violations of electoral conduct regulations.

Beyond financial impropriety, the BNP claims their political opponents have escalated to physical intimidation. Amin alleged that rival party members have deployed “criminals” in Cumilla-14 and Bogura-4 constituencies. In Chauddagram, within the Cumilla-11 constituency, BNP supporters were reportedly attacked under cover of darkness.

The opposition spokesperson further claimed that in Bogura’s Nondigram, houses were vandalized and looted on Monday night, resulting in injuries to several local BNP leaders.

Despite these challenges, Amin expressed cautious optimism about voter participation, suggesting there is palpable enthusiasm among citizens eager to exercise their voting rights freely “after nearly 18 years.” He described a “festive mood” among voters and called for all parties to contribute to maintaining a peaceful atmosphere.

“No matter how much propaganda, conspiracy, or violence is used to thwart our victory, the pro-democracy people will resist and establish their rights,” Amin asserted.

The BNP has urged the Election Commission and returning officers to take swift legal action against these alleged violations, emphasizing that electoral integrity is essential for Bangladesh’s democratic future.

These allegations emerge against a backdrop of long-standing political rivalry in Bangladesh, where elections have frequently been marred by accusations of irregularities, violence, and intimidation from all sides of the political spectrum. International observers will be watching closely to see whether the upcoming polls can meet democratic standards in a country seeking to strengthen its democratic institutions.
