Officials from the Baltic nations have firmly rejected Russian claims that Ukraine is utilizing their airspace to launch drone attacks on Russian territory, dismissing such allegations as completely unfounded.

The denials came swiftly after Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova suggested on Thursday that Ukraine was conducting aerial operations against Russia using airspace from neighboring NATO member states, particularly singling out the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

“This is baseless Russian propaganda,” said Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna in a statement to reporters. “Russia consistently manufactures false narratives to justify its aggression and to create pretexts for potential escalation. Estonia has never permitted the use of its airspace for attacks on Russian territory.”

Latvia’s Foreign Ministry issued a similar rebuke, calling the Russian claims “yet another example of disinformation designed to create tension and distrust among NATO allies.” Lithuanian officials likewise categorically denied any involvement in facilitating Ukrainian aerial operations against Russia.

The accusations come amid increasing tensions in the region, as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine approaches its third year. Military analysts note that Moscow has frequently accused NATO countries of direct involvement in the conflict, in what appears to be an attempt to justify potential escalation or to erode Western support for Ukraine.

The Baltic states, which share borders with Russia and have historical experience with Soviet occupation, have been among Ukraine’s strongest supporters since the conflict began in February 2022. They have consistently advocated for robust military assistance to Kyiv and stricter sanctions against Moscow.

Kristjan Prikk, a security analyst and former Baltic defense official, explained that Russia’s allegations follow a familiar pattern. “These claims serve multiple purposes for the Kremlin – they provide a narrative for domestic consumption that Russia is fighting not just Ukraine but NATO as well, while simultaneously attempting to drive wedges between Western allies.”

Ukrainian authorities have declined to comment specifically on the Russian allegations regarding Baltic airspace, maintaining their long-standing policy of ambiguity about cross-border attacks. However, Ukrainian officials have previously stated that they have the right to strike legitimate military targets inside Russia that are being used to attack Ukraine.

The drone warfare component of the Russia-Ukraine conflict has intensified significantly in recent months. Both sides have employed unmanned aerial vehicles for reconnaissance and attack operations. Ukrainian drones have reportedly struck oil refineries and military installations deep inside Russian territory, though the exact launch points of these operations remain classified.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg addressed the issue during a press conference in Brussels, stating that the alliance has no evidence supporting Russia’s claims about Baltic airspace being used for Ukrainian operations. “NATO allies operate in full compliance with international law, and these Russian allegations appear to be without merit,” Stoltenberg said.

Military experts point out that modern drones can have significant range capabilities, making transit through third-country airspace unnecessary for many operations. “This makes Russia’s accusations technically questionable as well as politically motivated,” said Dr. Anna Mikulska, a fellow at the Baker Institute for Public Policy.

The Baltic states have maintained a vigilant stance on their airspace integrity throughout the conflict. NATO air policing missions operate continuously in the region, monitoring and responding to any unauthorized incursions.

International law experts note that permitting another country to use national airspace for combat operations would potentially constitute direct involvement in a conflict. “The Baltic governments understand this clearly,” said Professor Thomas Keaney of Johns Hopkins University. “They are providing Ukraine with substantial support within legal frameworks, but allegations of airspace use for attacks cross a different threshold.”

As tensions continue to simmer, diplomatic channels between Russia and the Baltic states remain effectively frozen, with communication primarily occurring through public statements and diplomatic notes rather than direct dialogue.
