Entertainment Roundup: Fresh Offerings Across Streaming, Music, and Gaming
A diverse slate of entertainment options arrives this week, headlined by the critically acclaimed comedy “Splitsville” on Hulu and new music releases from Nick Jonas and J. Cole. These offerings join an eclectic mix of streaming content designed to appeal to various entertainment preferences.
Starting Thursday, Hulu welcomes “Splitsville,” a relationship comedy that was hailed as one of last year’s funniest original films. Created by Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin, the team behind “The Climb,” this screwball comedy explores open relationships and divorce with witty precision. The film stars Dakota Johnson, whose performance has been particularly praised, alongside Adria Arjona. AP Film Writer Jake Coyle noted that while the film employs contemporary filmmaking techniques, it “belongs more to a screwball tradition stretching back to the 1930s.”
Also arriving on Hulu Thursday is James L. Brooks’ political dramedy “Ella McCay,” starring Emma Mackey as an idealistic lieutenant governor thrust into power. Though the film struggled during its theatrical run, Mackey’s performance has been singled out as its redeeming quality.
Netflix continues its documentary lineup with “Queen of Chess,” directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rory Kennedy. The film, which recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, tells the compelling story of Hungarian chess prodigy Judit Polgár and her quest to defeat world champion Garry Kasparov in a male-dominated sport. It begins streaming Thursday.
On the music front, Nick Jonas is set to release “Sunday Best” on Friday, his first solo album in nearly five years. The lead single “Gut Punch” offers a preview of the smooth adult pop that has become Jonas’s signature sound, following his successful stadium tour with the Jonas Brothers.
The same day, influential rapper and producer J. Cole will drop his seventh studio album, “The Fall-Off.” Fan speculation suggests this could be Cole’s final record, fueled by the artist’s own cryptic messaging. The album’s lead single “Disc 2 Track 2” recalls Nas’s 2001 hit “Rewind,” potentially signaling a nostalgic homage to hip-hop’s rich history.
Television enthusiasts have several options to consider this week. Bravo’s reality series “Summer House” returns for its tenth season, following Manhattanites at their shared Hamptons getaway. The show begins streaming on Peacock Wednesday.
Legal drama fans can look forward to the fourth season of Netflix’s “The Lincoln Lawyer,” premiering Thursday. Based on Michael Connelly’s novels, the series follows talented Los Angeles attorney Mickey Haller (Manuel García-Rulfo), who finds himself needing his own legal defense this season after being falsely accused of murder.
Sunday brings two animal adoption specials: “Puppy Bowl XXII,” which will simulcast across multiple networks including Animal Planet and HBO Max, and “The Great American Rescue Bowl,” highlighting adoptable cats and dogs on Great American networks.
Peacock offers a fresh television adaptation of the 1989 Tom Hanks film “The ‘Burbs” starring Keke Palmer and Jack Whitehall. All eight episodes arrive Sunday, following a couple whose move to suburbia takes an unsettling turn when Palmer’s character becomes fixated on a neighbor she connects to a long-standing missing person case.
For gamers, Koei Tecmo’s “Nioh 3” launches Friday for PlayStation 5 and PC. Developed by Team Ninja, this action game follows Tokugawa Takechiyo as he battles supernatural creatures from Japanese folklore. Players can switch between traditional samurai combat and ninja tactics in an expansive open world that promises greater freedom than previous installments in the cult-favorite series.
This week’s diverse entertainment lineup offers something for nearly everyone, from comedy and drama to documentaries and interactive experiences, continuing to expand the breadth of content available across streaming platforms.
