Mexican Miner Rescued After Two-Week Ordeal in Flooded Mine
A miner was rescued Wednesday after being trapped for nearly 14 days in a collapsed mine in Mexico’s northern state of Sinaloa, according to authorities. Francisco Zapata Nájera emerged from the depths of El Rosario mine, offering a glimmer of hope in what has been a harrowing rescue operation.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the mixed news, announcing that while one miner had been successfully rescued, another was found dead, and one more remains missing in the flooded underground passages.
The crisis began on March 25 when a structural failure caused a dam breach, sending water rushing into the mine while 25 workers were inside. While 21 miners managed to escape immediately after the collapse, four were trapped deep within the mine. Five days into the ordeal, rescuers had already recovered one survivor from approximately 300 meters (985 feet) below the surface.
Divers located Zapata Nájera on Tuesday but faced significant challenges navigating the heavily flooded tunnels. It took rescue teams 21 additional hours to finally reach him and bring him to safety. Once rescued, medical personnel stabilized his condition before transporting him via Mexican Air Force helicopter to a hospital in Mazatlán, where specialists are now overseeing his treatment.
Hours before the successful rescue, President Sheinbaum had indicated that teams were waiting for water to be pumped from the mine to complete the extraction safely. The painstaking process highlights the dangerous conditions faced by both miners and rescue personnel in such operations.
This incident adds to Mexico’s troubling history of mining accidents, which have repeatedly raised concerns about worker safety and regulatory oversight in the industry. In August 2022, a particularly devastating accident at the El Pinabete coal mine in Coahuila claimed the lives of 10 miners when the facility flooded. That disaster sparked widespread criticism after revealing the precarious conditions under which many Mexican miners work—often without essential safety protections or proper supervision.
Despite weeks of efforts to pump water from the El Pinabete mine, authorities were never able to stabilize the mine shaft sufficiently to enable rescue teams to enter safely. The bodies of those miners were never recovered, compounding the tragedy for families and communities.
Mexico’s mining industry has experienced even larger disasters in the past. The country’s deadliest mining accident occurred in February 2006 at the Pasta de Conchos mine, also in Coahuila state, where an explosion killed 65 workers.
The mining sector is a significant contributor to Mexico’s economy, particularly in northern states like Sinaloa and Coahuila, where these accidents have occurred. The industry extracts valuable metals and minerals including silver, gold, copper, and coal, but has faced persistent scrutiny for safety standards that often fall short of international best practices.
Labor rights advocates have long called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and better emergency response protocols in Mexico’s mining operations. These recurring incidents have prompted questions about the balance between economic development and worker protection in a sector that employs thousands across the country.
As rescue operations continue for the still-missing miner at El Rosario, this latest incident serves as another sobering reminder of the dangers faced by workers in Mexico’s mining industry and the urgent need for enhanced safety measures throughout the sector.
