Kliff Kingsbury has been named assistant head coach for the Los Angeles Rams, the team announced Monday as they finalized their coaching staff for Sean McVay’s 10th season as head coach. The appointment comes as part of a significant restructuring of the Rams’ coaching personnel heading into the 2024-2025 NFL season.

Kingsbury, who previously served as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 2019 to 2022, joins the Rams after a stint as Washington’s offensive coordinator. The move reunites him with McVay, with whom he has maintained a close professional relationship throughout their careers in the NFL. Kingsbury is not arriving alone, bringing Brian Johnson as a senior offensive assistant after the two worked together in Washington. Johnson previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles.

In a notable promotion, McVay has elevated 35-year-old Nate Scheelhaase to offensive coordinator. Scheelhaase replaces Mike LaFleur, who recently accepted the head coaching position with the Arizona Cardinals. LaFleur’s departure continues a remarkable trend for the Rams, as he becomes the fourth consecutive offensive coordinator under McVay to secure a top NFL job, underscoring McVay’s influence as a developer of coaching talent.

Dave Ragone, who serves as the team’s quarterbacks coach, has received the additional title of associate coordinator, further solidifying the offensive leadership structure.

One significant absence from the new staff lineup is Aubrey Pleasant, who served as McVay’s assistant head coach during the previous season. Pleasant, who also held responsibilities as passing game coordinator while working with defensive backs, was notably entrusted with head coaching duties for multiple preseason games last year.

In a heartwarming development, recently retired wide receiver Robert Woods is joining the coaching staff as an assistant wide receivers coach. Woods, a Los Angeles native, spent the best five seasons of his 13-year NFL career with the Rams before announcing his retirement last week. He will work alongside Eric Yarber, who has been promoted to senior offensive assistant after spending nine seasons on McVay’s staff, and Rob Calabrese, who has been elevated to receivers coach.

The Rams are also welcoming former center Brian Allen to their coaching ranks as an assistant offensive line coach. Allen, who was part of the Rams’ Super Bowl championship team and a former teammate of Woods, transitions to coaching after serving as a consultant with the team last season.

Defensive coaching additions include Robert Wright, who joins as a defensive assistant after two years as Syracuse’s co-defensive coordinator.

On special teams, Bubba Ventrone has been appointed as the new coordinator, with Kyle Hoke serving as his assistant. Ventrone, who previously led special teams units for Indianapolis and Cleveland, replaces Chase Blackburn, who was dismissed by McVay in December following a season plagued by special teams mistakes.

These staffing changes come as the Rams look to build upon their rebound 2023 season, where they reached the playoffs after a disappointing 2022 campaign. The restructured coaching staff combines experienced NFL minds like Kingsbury with up-and-coming talents such as Scheelhaase, reflecting McVay’s continued emphasis on innovation and development as he enters his second decade at the helm of the franchise.

With these appointments, the Rams appear positioned to maintain their reputation as one of the league’s most forward-thinking organizations, blending coaching continuity with fresh perspectives as they pursue another championship run.
