A Pokemon card game event scheduled for Saturday at Japan’s controversial Yasukuni Shrine has been canceled after sparking outrage in China, further straining already tense relations between the two Asian powerhouses.

The Pokemon Company, an affiliate of Nintendo, issued a formal apology in both Japanese and Chinese languages, explaining that the event had been privately organized by a certified Pokemon card player for children. The company acknowledged that information about the event was mistakenly shared on its official website.

“It was an event that should not have been held to begin with,” the company stated, attributing the posting to “the lack of our understanding.” The company quickly removed all information about the event from its website and referenced its motto of “connecting the world with Pokemon” while pledging to be more considerate of all stakeholders in the future.

The planned event touched a particularly sensitive historical nerve. Yasukuni Shrine honors Japan’s 2.5 million war dead, including several military leaders convicted as Class-A war criminals after World War II. For many in East Asia, particularly China and South Korea, the shrine has become a potent symbol of Japan’s wartime aggression and perceived lack of sufficient remorse for its imperial past.

Chinese state media responded forcefully to news of the event. The People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, warned on its Weibo social media account that “brands that disregard history and hurt the feelings of the Chinese people will ultimately be abandoned by the market.” The publication added that “relevant enterprises must accordingly take social responsibility and not make light of the heavy weight of history in the name of entertainment.”

The backlash comes amid deteriorating relations between Tokyo and Beijing. Tensions escalated significantly after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested in November that Japan might become involved if China takes military action against Taiwan. Beijing considers self-governing Taiwan an inalienable part of Chinese territory and has responded to Takaichi’s comments with both economic and diplomatic retaliation.

Takaichi herself was previously a regular visitor to Yasukuni Shrine, though she has refrained from visiting since taking office in October, likely aware of the diplomatic consequences such a visit would entail.

The Pokemon incident highlights the complex intersection of business, entertainment, and historical memory in East Asia. For Japanese companies with global ambitions, navigating these sensitivities has become increasingly challenging as regional tensions rise. The Pokemon Company’s swift apology reflects an understanding of the economic stakes involved, as China represents one of the largest gaming and entertainment markets in the world.

This is not the first time that seemingly innocuous cultural or entertainment content has triggered diplomatic incidents between Japan and its neighbors. Historical grievances related to Japan’s wartime actions continue to influence contemporary relations, with sites like Yasukuni Shrine serving as flashpoints.

The incident also underscores how carefully controlled social media platforms in China can quickly amplify nationalist sentiment. Chinese authorities often permit or even encourage online outrage over perceived historical slights, particularly those involving Japan, as a way to channel public emotion in politically acceptable directions.

As economic ties between Japan and China remain vital for both countries despite political tensions, companies like Pokemon and Nintendo find themselves delicately balancing business interests against geopolitical realities, with even a children’s card game becoming entangled in decades-old historical disputes and contemporary power politics.
