A groundbreaking modern adaptation of Agatha Christie’s work is set to hit screens next year, marking the first time the renowned mystery author’s stories have been contemporized for an English-speaking television audience.
“Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence,” a six-part drama series for BritBox, brings the beloved detective duo into the present day, complete with smartphones, social media, and TikTok—while still maintaining the essential elements of Christie’s classic mystery formula.
Speaking from the set of the production at a 17th-century English mansion, writer and executive producer Phoebe Eclair-Powell explained the delicate balance of incorporating modern technology without compromising the integrity of Christie’s storytelling.
“We have used it, but carefully, sparingly, and when we think actually that it’s enhanced the original story that it’s adapted from,” Eclair-Powell said. The production team received special permission from Christie’s estate to pursue this contemporary vision.
James Prichard, Christie’s great-grandson who manages the literary rights to her estate, enthusiastically supported the adaptation. “Phoebe came to us with a brilliant take on the stories which put them in the modern day, and because of the energy and vitality of these characters, it felt completely natural to say yes!” he wrote in an email.
While this marks the first English-language modernization of Christie’s work, contemporary adaptations have already found success in Japan, Korea, India, and Sweden, demonstrating the timeless appeal of her storytelling across cultural boundaries.
Stars Antonia Thomas (“The Good Doctor”) and Josh Dylan (“The Buccaneers”) lead the cast as the titular detective duo. Thomas, who noted this is her first role as a title character, described the production as “grounded and modern” while still featuring the pair “capering in a classic Agatha Christie way.”
She expressed hope that the contemporary setting might attract viewers who might otherwise be deterred by period dramas. “I think that people who might not necessarily be drawn to watch something like that because it’s a period piece will really enjoy this because it feels very fresh,” Thomas said.
Dylan characterized the modernization as having a “looseness” and “freshness” that distinguishes it from traditional Christie adaptations.
In this updated version, Tommy is reimagined as a crime writer while Tuppence struggles as an actor, making them both amateur detectives. Their relationship is infused with a “will-they-won’t-they” dynamic that adds romantic tension to their mystery-solving adventures.
The Tommy and Tuppence characters hold a special place in Christie’s body of work. Unlike her more famous detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, Tommy and Tuppence appeared in stories that spanned from 1922 to 1973, aging alongside Christie herself throughout her career. This unique aspect made them particular favorites of the author.
One of the production’s key challenges has been adapting classic mystery scenarios—like the locked room puzzle—for an era when technology might seemingly simplify detective work. The creative team has been careful not to allow modern conveniences to undermine the satisfying complexity of Christie’s original puzzles.
The cast also includes acclaimed actress Imelda Staunton as Tommy’s Aunt Ada, adding further prestige to the production.
Filming continues throughout November at various locations in the United Kingdom, with the series expected to premiere on BritBox in 2026. For Christie fans and newcomers alike, this fresh interpretation promises to demonstrate how her masterful storytelling can transcend time periods while maintaining the essential ingredients that have made her the world’s best-selling mystery writer.
