More than 60 CEOs from Minnesota’s largest companies have jointly called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions following recent fatal shootings by federal agents during immigration enforcement operations that have sparked widespread protests in the state.

In an open letter published Sunday on the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce website, executives from corporate giants including Target, Best Buy, 3M, General Mills, and UnitedHealth Group urged government officials at all levels to collaborate on finding “real solutions” to the current crisis.

“With yesterday’s tragic news, we are calling for an immediate de-escalation of tensions and for state, local and federal officials to work together to find real solutions,” the letter states.

The public statement marks a significant shift for many of Minnesota’s business leaders who had previously remained silent on the immigration enforcement surge and ensuing unrest. Among the signatories are 3M CEO William Brown, Best Buy CEO Corie Barry, General Mills CEO Jeff Harmening, Target’s incoming CEO Michael Fiddelke, and UnitedHealth Group CEO Stephen Helmsley.

The business community’s intervention comes at a critical moment as tensions in Minnesota have escalated dramatically in recent weeks. Protesters have targeted businesses they perceive as not taking a strong enough stance against federal law enforcement activities, with Minneapolis-based Target becoming a particular focus of demonstrations.

The situation has placed Minnesota companies in an increasingly difficult position. Earlier in January, a Minnesota hotel faced significant backlash after refusing to allow federal immigration agents to stay at its property. The hotel later apologized, stating the refusal violated its own policies.

Economic concerns are mounting rapidly. In a lawsuit filed this month seeking to halt the immigration operations, the state of Minnesota and Twin Cities officials cited “devastating economic impacts,” claiming some businesses have reported sales plummeting by up to 80% amid the ongoing crisis.

The scale of federal immigration enforcement actions in Minnesota has been substantial, creating ripple effects throughout the state’s economy and social fabric. The operations have particularly impacted immigrant communities and created uncertainty for businesses that rely on immigrant workers or serve diverse customer bases.

“In this difficult moment for our community, we call for peace and focused cooperation among local, state and federal leaders to achieve a swift and durable solution that enables families, businesses, our employees, and communities across Minnesota to resume our work to build a bright and prosperous future,” the business leaders wrote.

The intervention by Minnesota’s corporate leadership highlights the growing economic stakes in what has become both a humanitarian and political crisis. Minnesota has long been home to significant immigrant communities that have contributed to the state’s economic growth and cultural diversity.

Industry analysts note that the unified response from such a wide range of business leaders is unusual and reflects the severity of the situation. The executives represent companies that collectively employ hundreds of thousands of workers in Minnesota and contribute billions to the state’s economy.

The letter carefully avoids taking a political stance on immigration policy itself, instead focusing on the immediate need for cooperation between different levels of government and a reduction in tensions that have disrupted communities and businesses throughout the state.

As protests continue and federal operations remain ongoing, the business community’s call for de-escalation adds a powerful economic voice to the growing debate over immigration enforcement tactics and their impacts on local communities.
