Mexican Navy Continues Search for Missing Humanitarian Aid Vessels Bound for Cuba

Mexican naval forces continued search operations for a second day on Friday for two sailboats carrying humanitarian aid to Cuba that have been unaccounted for since their departure from Isla Mujeres on March 20.

Nine people are aboard the missing vessels, which were transporting relief supplies to the Caribbean nation currently facing severe energy shortages and economic challenges. The disappearance has sparked concern throughout the region, with authorities from multiple countries joining the search efforts.

Confusion mounted briefly when reports circulated that the U.S. Coast Guard had located the vessels, but Mexican officials quickly clarified that the boats remain missing. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed to The Associated Press that they were not participating in the search operations.

“From our country, we are doing everything possible in the search and rescue of these brothers in struggle,” Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel wrote on social media Friday, underscoring the diplomatic significance of the humanitarian mission.

The missing vessels are part of a broader humanitarian initiative called Nuestra América Convoy, which successfully delivered its first shipment to Havana earlier this week. That initial delivery included 14 tons of food and medicine, 73 solar panels, and approximately a dozen bicycles—critical supplies for a nation experiencing widespread shortages.

The organization released a statement indicating that, based on the vessels’ reported speed, they should arrive in Havana between Friday and Saturday. They emphasized that the crews are experienced sailors and that both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety systems and signaling equipment.

“We are cooperating fully with the authorities and remain confident in the crews’ ability to reach Havana safely,” the organization stated, while simultaneously issuing an open call for any information about possible sightings of the boats.

The disappearance comes at a particularly challenging time for Cuba, which is experiencing some of its worst power outages in recent memory. A U.S. fuel blockade has exacerbated the country’s economic crisis, leading to crippling blackouts that have pushed the island nation toward what some observers describe as the brink of collapse.

In response to these conditions, a growing number of countries and aid organizations have stepped up humanitarian shipments to Cuba, attempting to alleviate some of the hardship faced by its 11 million residents.

The Mexican Navy has mobilized significant resources in the search operation. Naval commands in Isla Mujeres and Yucalpetén have been alerted, and naval search, rescue and surveillance stations have been activated. The Navy has deployed vessels and Persuader aircraft to conduct maritime and aerial search patterns along the estimated route between Isla Mujeres and Havana.

Search coordinators are taking into account possible course changes, prevailing weather conditions, and ocean currents that may have affected the vessels’ journey. The operation has also become an international effort, with Mexican authorities working in coordination with maritime rescue centers in Poland, France, Cuba, and the United States, as well as diplomatic representatives from the countries of origin of those onboard.

The situation highlights both the growing humanitarian crisis in Cuba and the challenges faced by those attempting to provide relief. As economic conditions on the island continue to deteriorate, international efforts to deliver aid face logistical and sometimes political complications.

For now, families of the nine individuals aboard the two sailboats await news as the search continues across the waters between Mexico and Cuba, where hope remains that favorable conditions and the crews’ sailing experience will lead to their safe arrival.
