The lobbying firm co-founded by Peter Mandelson, a former U.K. ambassador to the United States, collapsed into bankruptcy Friday amid the growing scandal over his connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Global Counsel has ceased operations, resulting in approximately 80 job losses at its UK office. The company, which employs around 130 people worldwide, saw clients rapidly severing ties following revelations about the extent of Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein, who died in a New York prison in 2019.

Consulting firm Interpath has been appointed as administrators to assess options for the business and review its assets. Will Wright, UK chief executive of Interpath and joint administrator, explained the sudden downfall: “While Global Counsel had grown over the past 15 years to become one of the U.K.’s leading public affairs consultancies, the rapid and sudden loss of clients over recent weeks has had a monumental impact on the business.”

The collapse comes despite Mandelson’s attempts to distance himself from the company he co-founded in 2010 after the Labour Party lost power. Earlier this month, he resigned from Global Counsel’s board and sold his shares, apparently trying to shield the firm from his mounting personal scandal.

The controversy centers on millions of pages of files recently released by the U.S. Justice Department that documented Mandelson’s extensive communications with Epstein. These records revealed that Mandelson shared potentially market-moving government information with the disgraced financier in 2009 while serving as a senior member of the Labour government. Mandelson reportedly referred to Epstein as his “best pal.”

The documents also contained evidence of financial ties, showing payments totaling $75,000 from Epstein to accounts linked to Mandelson or his husband, Reinaldo Avila da Silva, made in 2003 and 2004. Mandelson has questioned the authenticity of these bank statements and, in his resignation letter to the Labour Party, claimed he had no recollection of receiving such funds.

The fallout has extended beyond the business world. UK police recently searched Mandelson’s London residence and another property connected to him as part of an investigation into potential misconduct in public office. It’s important to note that Mandelson is not accused of any sexual offenses in relation to Epstein.

On Thursday, in a related development, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on the same suspicion of misconduct in public office, though in his case pertaining to his tenure as a UK trade envoy.

Mandelson’s appointment to his diplomatic role nearly ended British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s career as questions about his judgment intensified. The veteran politician has had a controversial career spanning decades, which included two resignations from Tony Blair’s governments around the turn of the century.

Just nine months after appointing him, Starmer dismissed Mandelson in September following the publication of an earlier batch of emails that showed he had maintained his friendship with Epstein even after the financier’s 2008 conviction for sex offenses involving a minor.

The UK government now plans to release files related to Mandelson’s vetting process, hoping to exonerate Starmer by demonstrating that Mandelson was not truthful during the appointment process.

Global Counsel’s collapse represents the latest casualty in the widening Epstein scandal, which continues to implicate high-profile figures across business, politics, and society. The firm’s rapid downfall highlights how quickly reputational damage can destroy even established businesses in today’s environment, where ethical standards and associations are increasingly scrutinized.

For the employees of Global Counsel, many of whom had no connection to Mandelson’s personal dealings, the bankruptcy marks an unfortunate end to what had been one of the UK’s most influential public affairs consultancies of the past decade.
