Popular YouTuber IShowSpeed Completes Extensive African Tour to Challenge Stereotypes

American streamer and YouTuber IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., is wrapping up an ambitious 28-day tour across Africa that aimed to showcase the continent’s rich cultural diversity beyond common Western stereotypes.

“I’ve done so many incredible things in my life,” Watkins reflected during his stop in Botswana. “But this trip is different. It opened my eyes. Africa is not what I thought.”

The 21-year-old content creator’s extensive journey, branded as “Speed Does Africa,” began in Angola in late December and spanned 20 nations across southern, eastern, and North Africa. His itinerary included attending the Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco on January 18, before continuing to Senegal where he joined fans celebrating the national soccer team’s victory.

In Nigeria, Watkins marked two significant milestones – surpassing 50 million YouTube subscribers and celebrating his 21st birthday. The tour continued through Ghana, where he revealed his ancestral connections to the West African nation, sampling local jollof rice, meeting a traditional ruler, and experiencing a massage at the shea butter museum.

“I am back home, there ain’t no better feeling,” Watkins said upon arriving in Ghana. His final destination appears to be Namibia, where he arrived on Tuesday.

Throughout his journey, Watkins streamed his experiences live on YouTube, with some videos lasting up to nine hours. These streams featured him enthusiastically sampling local cuisines, learning traditional dances, and challenging local athletes – often with his trademark exuberant shouting and excitement. His visits frequently attracted large crowds of followers who gathered to catch a glimpse of the internet celebrity.

One particularly meaningful moment occurred in Senegal’s capital, Dakar, where Watkins visited the House of Slaves on Gorée Island – a historical site symbolizing the Atlantic slave trade that forcibly displaced millions of Africans.

“Americans, especially Black Americans, need to know that our histories are tied, that many of our ancestors might have been deported from Gorée,” noted Pape Seye, a 40-year-old Dakar resident.

Souleymane Ba, a 24-year-old literature student from Senegal, expressed hope that Watkins’ tour would help change negative perceptions: “I hope that as Americans learn more about Africa and see its rich cultures, they will realize it is not made up of ‘shithole countries.'”

The impact of Watkins’ African tour has resonated with many Americans following his journey. GrowYourEther, another American streamer, remarked in a TikTok video: “IShowSpeed is single-handedly changing our view of Africa.” American influencer Caroline Jones shared an emotional Instagram post, saying she was moved by the warm welcome Watkins received, adding, “We had been told Africa is primitive, that it’s dangerous.”

However, not all reactions have been positive. Beninese influencer Nelly Mbaa, known online as Afro Chronik, criticized Watkins’ approach, suggesting he embodies Western expectations that young Black men be valued for spectacle rather than intellect. She argued his following stems from performing “an absurd, exaggerated and grotesque character” rather than subtle humor.

“If he were to abandon this persona – the constant grimacing, shouting and controversial remarks – his audience would likely disappear,” Mbaa said.

Watkins has built a massive online following with more than 50 million YouTube subscribers, 45 million Instagram followers, and 47 million on TikTok. His brand centers on loud, exaggerated reactions that have become his signature online persona but have also generated controversy.

In 2022, he was banned from a professional online gaming competition following a sexist outburst against a female player. He was also briefly suspended from YouTube for showing sexual content in a video game.

Despite these controversies, his African tour appears to have accomplished its primary goal of highlighting aspects of the continent rarely seen in Western media, potentially shifting perceptions among his massive young audience.
