In a remarkable story of survival, a flight attendant lived through being thrown from an Air Canada plane after it collided with a fire truck at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, her daughter confirmed Monday.

“It’s a total miracle,” Sarah Lepine told Canadian news station TVA Nouvelles about her mother, Solange Tremblay, who sustained multiple fractures to one leg requiring surgery but was otherwise in stable condition.

The incident occurred Sunday night when the Air Canada jet, carrying more than 70 passengers, struck a fire truck that was responding to an issue with another aircraft at the busy New York airport. The violent collision destroyed the plane’s nose section and claimed the lives of both the pilot and copilot.

“I’m still trying to understand how all this happened,” Lepine said, “but she definitely has a guardian angel watching over her.”

Aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti, a former federal crash investigator, agreed with the assessment, calling Tremblay’s survival miraculous “compared to the destruction of the nose of the airplane.”

Guzzetti explained that the flight attendant’s survival likely stemmed from the specialized seating used by cabin crew members. “The flight attendant’s seat is kind of a jump seat that folds down and is bolted to the wall, the same wall that the cockpit utilizes,” he said.

These seats feature four-point restraint systems, similar to racing harnesses, providing significantly more protection than standard passenger seatbelts. “It’s a very robust seat,” Guzzetti noted. “It’s designed to withstand probably more crash loads than passenger seats because you need the flight attendant to help passengers get out of an airplane after a crash.”

The LaGuardia accident has drawn comparisons to the 2013 Asiana Airlines crash at San Francisco International Airport, where at least two flight attendants were ejected from the aircraft when it struck a sea wall during landing. That incident, involving Asiana Flight 214 with 291 people on board, resulted in three fatalities.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched a full investigation into the LaGuardia collision, which will examine multiple factors including airport ground communications, visibility conditions, and emergency response protocols. Investigators will analyze cockpit voice recorders and flight data to determine why the aircraft and emergency vehicle were on the runway simultaneously.

For Air Canada, this accident represents one of its most serious safety incidents in recent years. The airline, Canada’s largest carrier, has dispatched a team to New York to assist with the investigation and provide support to affected passengers and crew members.

LaGuardia Airport, one of the busiest in the United States despite its relatively small footprint, temporarily closed the affected runway after the incident, causing dozens of flight cancellations and delays that rippled throughout the Northeast corridor.

Airport safety experts note that runway incursions – when an unauthorized aircraft, vehicle or person is on a runway – remain a persistent safety concern at airports worldwide. The Federal Aviation Administration has made reducing such incidents a priority in recent years through improved ground radar systems and communication protocols.

As the investigation continues, Tremblay’s survival stands as a testament to both the effectiveness of crew safety equipment and extraordinary fortune amid catastrophic circumstances.
