Top NCAA Tournament Seeds Face Challenging Path to Final Four
Unlike last year’s NCAA Tournament where the No. 1 seeds clearly dominated the competition and all reached the Final Four, experts are predicting a more unpredictable outcome for this year’s March Madness.
The tournament’s top seeds – Duke, Arizona, Michigan, and defending national champion Florida – have been established as the betting favorites at BetMGM Sportsbook. However, handicappers believe the path to Indianapolis will likely include some surprises along the way.
Bruce Marshall, a respected handicapper for WagerTalk/Gold Sheet, suggests this year’s bracket could see more diversity in the Final Four lineup. “I don’t think we’ll see all of them (No. 1 seeds) in the Final Four,” Marshall noted. “Maybe somebody sneaks through on the three-line. I’d watch Virginia possibly. They’ve got a pretty good potential road in their region.”
Marshall specifically highlighted Michigan’s vulnerability in their region, where Virginia could potentially make a surprising run. “That’s Michigan’s region. I think Michigan is beatable now,” he explained.
Despite predictions of potential upsets, Marshall acknowledged similarities to last year’s tournament structure, where only a select few teams realistically contended for the championship. The concentration of talent at top programs has become more pronounced in recent years, creating clearer tiers of competitive ability.
The NCAA selection committee appears to have crafted largely predictable first-round matchups based on betting odds. Among all opening games, only two feature favorites as lower-seeded teams – both in 8-9 seed matchups. Utah State is favored by 2.5 points over Villanova, while Iowa holds the same edge over Clemson.
This pattern of favorites largely aligning with higher seeds suggests the committee effectively ranked teams according to their perceived strength, though the 8-9 matchups traditionally represent the tournament’s most evenly contested games.
Patrick Berbert, college basketball trader at Caesars Sportsbook, reinforced the expectation of favorites performing well. “We’re expecting a fairly chalky tournament this year, similar to what we saw last season,” he said.
Berbert also highlighted how the NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) era has transformed college basketball’s competitive landscape. “The NIL era has really widened the gap between the top programs and the rest of the field,” he explained. This growing disparity has made it increasingly difficult for mid-major programs and lower seeds to compete with basketball powerhouses that can attract and retain elite talent through NIL opportunities.
From a gambling perspective, the tournament continues to grow in popularity. “From a betting standpoint, we’re projecting record engagement again,” Berbert added, indicating the ever-increasing interest in wagering on college basketball’s premier event.
The tournament’s structure creates natural storylines between established powers and potential Cinderella teams looking to make history. While upsets remain a beloved tradition of March Madness, oddsmakers and handicappers suggest the championship will likely be claimed by one of the top-seeded teams.
As the tournament begins, basketball fans nationwide will be watching closely to see if this year’s bracket produces more surprises than last season’s relatively predictable outcomes, where the four No. 1 seeds demonstrated their dominance by all reaching the Final Four.
The first weekend of tournament play often provides the clearest indication of whether favorites will maintain their advantage or if lower-seeded teams can create the magical moments that define March Madness.
