Apple Unveils New Budget iPhone, MacBook and iPad Lineup at Global Events

Apple CEO Tim Cook’s promised “big week” of product announcements materialized Wednesday with the introduction of a budget-friendly iPhone, new entry-level MacBook, updated iPad Air models, refreshed monitors, and higher-end chipsets. The tech giant showcased its latest innovations at hands-on media events held simultaneously in New York, London, and Shanghai.

The new product lineup comes as Apple recently posted record quarterly earnings, driven by strong sales of its iPhone 17 models. The company appears to be capitalizing on this sales momentum despite not yet delivering on its 2024 promise to enhance Siri with artificial intelligence capabilities.

All newly announced products will be available for preorder starting Wednesday, with the company expanding its reach into more budget-conscious market segments while also refreshing its premium offerings.

iPhone 17e: Budget-Friendly Option with Premium Features

The iPhone 17e represents Apple’s latest effort to attract cost-conscious consumers while maintaining core premium features. Priced at $599—$200 less than the base iPhone 17—the 17e comes equipped with the same A19 chip powering the standard iPhone 17 model.

Storage capacity has been doubled to 256GB compared to the previous 16e model, addressing a common pain point for budget phone buyers. Camera capabilities have been significantly upgraded with a 48-megapixel system, while the new C1X modem promises faster cellular connectivity.

Though the 17e features a slightly smaller screen with a lower refresh rate compared to the base iPhone 17, it still incorporates Apple’s Super Retina display and Ceramic Shield 2 protection against scratches. The device also includes MagSafe with Qi2 support for wireless charging and is available in black, white, and light pink.

iPad Air Refreshed with M4 Chip and More RAM

The midrange iPad Air lineup has received a notable update with Apple’s M4 chip—a step below the M5 processor found in the premium iPad Pro models. Despite not featuring the latest chipset, the M4 provides ample power for streaming, web browsing, email, and even video editing tasks.

In a significant upgrade, Apple has increased the RAM from 8GB to 12GB without raising prices. Cellular versions of the iPad Air also include the C1X modem for faster mobile connections.

The 11-inch iPad Air starts at $599 while the 13-inch version is priced from $799, with each model offering 128GB of base storage. The RAM upgrade particularly stands out as a value proposition for users who need more processing power for multitasking and content creation.

MacBook Lineup Expansion and Upgrades

Apple’s MacBook lineup saw both expansion and refinement with the introduction of the brand-new MacBook Neo and updates to existing models.

The MacBook Pro series received the new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, designed for intensive professional workloads with improved performance and battery efficiency. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro chip now comes with 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, priced at $2,199—a $200 increase over the 2024 M4 Pro model. The 16-inch variant starts at $2,699 with the highest-tier M5 Pro chip, 24GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage.

Both Pro models maintain the same displays but now support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for enhanced connectivity.

The MacBook Air received an upgrade to Apple’s base M5 chip, with storage doubled from 256GB to 512GB while maintaining 16GB of RAM. The 13-inch Air is now priced at $1,099—$100 more than the previous M4 Air model—while the 15-inch starts at $1,299.

Perhaps most notably, Apple introduced the MacBook Neo, a new 13-inch entry-level laptop powered by the A18 Pro chip—the same processor found in the iPhone 16 Pro. Starting at $599 for the 256GB model with 8GB of RAM, the Neo represents Apple’s most aggressive move into the budget laptop market, directly competing with Google Chromebooks and economical Windows machines. Students and educators can preorder either Neo model with a $100 discount.

Premium Displays for Professionals

Apple also unveiled two 27-inch 5K display monitors—the Studio Display and Studio Display XDR. Both feature 5,120 x 2,880 resolution, embedded 12MP Center Stage cameras, six-speaker audio systems, and expanded connectivity with Thunderbolt 5 and USB-C ports.

The premium XDR model includes mini-LED backlighting, improved contrast, and a 120Hz refresh rate (compared to the standard model’s 60Hz), making it particularly appealing to creative professionals, gamers, and HDR content enthusiasts.

The base Studio Display is priced at $1,599, while the XDR variant commands a premium at $3,299, with various upgrade options available for both monitors.

This comprehensive product refresh demonstrates Apple’s strategy of targeting both budget-conscious consumers and professionals across its device ecosystem, while maintaining premium positioning within each market segment.
